Foreign Minister Sameh Choukri is heading the International Conference in support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as well as the Foreign Ministers of Jordan and Sweden.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Advisor Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that the meeting was held against the background of the large budget deficit in the Agency’s budget for 2018, which has become a great threat to the Agency by reducing its ability to provide services to Palestinian refugees, which necessitates a reevaluation of the status quo and the discussion of ways Which should be followed to find radical solutions to the current crisis, including innovative sources of funding through international institutions and new partnerships with donor countries.
In its contacts with all actors, Egypt stresses the importance of not linking financial contributions for humanitarian purposes with those of a political nature because of the obvious politicization of humanitarian issues in the first place. He called for avoiding sudden decisions that expose the work. Humanitarian situation as a whole is at considerable risk, especially as the time available to donor financial resource mobilization is very tight.
He stressed Egypt’s continued support for the Agency’s work as one of the tools to deal with the refugee issue as one of the pivotal final status issues, stressing the need to preserve the work of UNRWA and maintain the contributions received until final resolution of the issue. He stressed that the work and continuation of UNRWA’s mandate and its existing structures under the current regional situation is very turbulent and not a luxury. He said that Egypt’s joint invitation to this meeting is a continuation of the priority it places on solving the Palestinian refugee issue.
The Spokesman explained that Egypt had, in its capacity as Chairman of the Advisory Committee on more than one occasion, sent messages to international donors to urge them to shoulder their responsibilities towards the worsening financial crisis of UNRWA. Some of these messages were jointly sent by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee and the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri sent a number of his counterparts to donor countries. The Egyptian Foreign Minister also put the financial crisis of UNRWA at the table of the Arab ministerial delegation held in Amman last January.
