Tolls expected to rise by more than 1.8% in 2022 – Transport

Toll prices on Portuguese motorways are expected to increase by 1.84% on 1 January 2022, taking into account the quick estimate, released this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics, of the consumer price index (IPC) for October, excluding housing.

The year-on-year inflation rate for October, without housing, on the Mainland, which still has to be confirmed by the INE in November, is the indicator that serves as a reference for the annual update of toll rates.

By law, motorway concessionaires must submit to the Government by November 15th their proposal for the revision of tolls, to take effect on January 1st of the following year.

Both in 2020 and in 2021, the indicator that serves as a reference for this price update was negative, with toll rates thus remaining unchanged.

In 2019, tolls on national highways were updated by 0.88%, in 2018 from 1.42%, in 2017 from 0.84% and in 2016 from 0.62%.
