Hyun Ji Ryu sailed calmly until the seventh inning, Marcus Semien and Rowdy Téllez each contributed home runs and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 7-3 yesterday.

Ryu (1-1) allowed just one dirty run through six and two-thirds innings, during which he struck out seven. He limited the Yankees to four hits and one walk.

The Blue Jays ace retired 12 batters in a row after DJ LeMahieu led off the first inning with an infield single.

New York center fielder Aaron Hicks returned to the lineup and hit 4-for-3 after receiving permission from manager Aaron Boone to miss Monday’s engagement following the death of Daunte Wright, a black citizen who was gunned down by the police in Minnesota.

“He’s got a good mentality now,” Boone said before the game. “There is no doubt that he was very sad yesterday when he spoke to me in my office.”

The loss went to Jameson Taillon (0-1).

Jacob Stallings had three hits and three RBIs for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who beat Blake Snell in the first inning to beat the San Diego Padres 8-4.

The game lasted four hours and seven minutes, and included 17 walks, seven batters hit and 27 runners left on the bases.
