Lyon qualified for their first continental final, taking the best of the English Wasps (20-18), Saturday on their ground at the Stade Gerland in the semi-final of the European Challenge.
In the final of this “little European Cup” at the end of May in Marseille, the Lyonnais will face Toulon, who beat Saracens.
Guilty of numerous handling errors, the Lyonnais first struggled to get out of their camp and to be dangerous in attack against the club based in Coventry which logically took the lead at the break (8-3) thanks to a try from trickster of scrum half Dan Robson, left behind a group near the line (5-0, 24th).
Faced with a heavy and powerful team, LOU Rugby was behind in the score for a long time (10-11, 51st) before getting their hands on the match, thanks in particular to the defeat of their English second line Joel Kpoku, elected player of the match.
The LOU reversed the score after returning from the locker room, thanks to two tries from two young players from its training center, opener Léo Berdeu (47th) and hooker Yanis Charcosset (17-11, 54th).
After two failures (58th, 61st) against the poles, Berdeu scored a precious penalty a quarter of an hour from the end to make the break (20-11, 65th).
After the center try, Jimmy Gopperth, who reduced the gap to come back to two points (20-18, 75th), the Lyonnais did not tremble in the face of the latest English attacks.
By managing to beat the formidable English Saracens, Toulon has won its bet to join Marseille, for a European Challenge Cup final. At the end of a difficult match, won 25-16 in its Mayol stadium, the RCT continues its beautiful love story with European competitions and will find Lyon in a Franco-French final.
