A group of tourists and guides have observed a rare natural phenomenon in Malaysia. They witnessed the eruption of a mud volcano. A huge amount of gunk spewed out of the ground, covering the surrounding grass in no time.
“Our first activity after breakfast was a visit to the mud volcano area at Tabin Wildlife Resort,” said tour guide Hamit Suban. When he stood in an observation tower with a group of foreign tourists to spot birds and other animals, they got to see the spectacle. “We suddenly heard a loud bang before we discovered the mudslide,” said Hamit. It was also a very special moment for him. Although he has been working as a guide since 2005, this was also his first time witnessing an erupting mud volcano up close.
Still, it is not the first time the eruption has occurred in the area. A similar natural phenomenon also took place in 2014 and 2019. The mud that erupts would contain a high concentration of minerals that attract animals to the area.
