The FOPH has announced that Spain will join the list of countries at risk for Switzerland in terms of coronavirus. Pregnant women are now among those at risk.
Travelers returning from Spain will have to quarantine themselves in Switzerland. Spain has been added by the Federal Office of Public Health to the list of countries with a high risk of infection with Covid-19. The Balearics and the Canaries are not affected. Travelers in transit for less than 24 hours in Spain are not affected either, such as travelers crossing the Iberian Peninsula to return from Portugal, said Patrick Mathys, head of the crisis section at the OFSP.
The measure enters into force on Saturday, that is to say since Saturday at midnight, announced the Federal Department of the Interior. The contamination rate for the Balearics is around 43 per 100,000 inhabitants and around 6 per 100,000 for the Canaries. Now 46 countries and regions are on the risk list.
The Bahamas, Equatorial Guinea, Romania, Sao Tome and Principe, Singapore and Sint Maarten are newly on the list of countries at risk. Switzerland has withdrawn Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates and Russia.
Since July 6, anyone crossing the border from a state or territory with a high risk of infection must self-quarantine for ten days. These people must register with the cantonal authorities within two days. These sporadically monitor compliance with the quarantine. Currently, 16,269 people are affected.
Pregnant women are also now on the list of people at risk, said Patrick Mathys, head of the crisis management and international collaboration section at the OFS. According to indications from the Swiss Society of Gynecology, they are indeed more likely to experience a serious course of the disease.
“There are still many unknowns,” admitted Virginie Masserey, head of the infection control section of the FOPH. “It seems that the risk is between 1.5 and 5 times higher for pregnant women than for those of the same age of having to be hospitalized in intensive care”.
The risks to the newborn are also still unclear. “The delivery may have to be induced, which poses a risk to him. The placenta may also have been infected, which can mean less food for the fetus and a growth disorder. ”
No fear of losing your salary
The authorities asked the concerned travelers on Wednesday to respect the quarantine obligation as well as possible. “In March, the loss of earnings benefits were extended to non-faulty contamination by the Federal Council,” recalled Michael Schöll, Deputy Director of the Federal Office of Justice. This is so that everyone respects the isolation instructions as well as possible without fear of losing their salary.
“No one should be tempted to avoid quarantine for financial reasons,” he told reporters. “Stay at home and notify your employer,” he added, especially for people returning from Spain from Saturday.
In the event of non-faulty quarantine, and even if the matter has not yet been settled by the courts, payment of the salary is guaranteed. This is the case for people who were already in Spain when the country was placed on the list, in particular.
For people who cannot work from home, the Federal Council has decided that payment of loss of earnings benefits is guaranteed for ten days. And employers have been “accommodating”, according to Michael Schöll.
Still tense situation
In general, the situation remains tense, with nearly 200 new cases still today (181), said Patrick Mathys. There is, however, some stabilization, with a positivity rate currently at 2.2%, compared to 3.5% in recent weeks.
Regarding a possible harmonization of measures at the federal level, Patrick Mathys said he was confident that the cantons would act accordingly if the situation were to worsen. The cantons are still able to trace the contacts of infected people, but could be overwhelmed if the number of cases increases significantly, pointed out the official.
In public transport, mobility has returned to what it was before the confinement, with the exception of some stations. Between 80 and 100% of travelers wear the mask.
The SwissCovid app downloaded 2.15 million times
The SwissCovid app has been downloaded 2.15 million times. And 327 reports of contamination were made, which corresponds to 10% of all positive people tested during the corresponding period.
The Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP) is not satisfied with this proportion, Sang-Il Kim, head of the digital transformation section of the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP), told the press on Wednesday. Bern. “We want to have more people with us”.
“We are still working on international data exchange with applications from neighboring countries and other EU countries. While one of them is technically at its wit’s end, various issues still need to be resolved at the political level, ”said the official.
Knowing the places of contamination is a central question at this stage of the epidemic. “What you can see with the figures that the FOPH delivers every day is the number of people isolated and in quarantine. We get it through contact tracing, ”said the specialist.
“So far, we have no other data on the site of infection. We now hope to have much more information on the current epidemiological situation. This includes the place of infection, if it is known, ”he further noted.
The canton of Zurich captures the data of all passengers landing in Switzerland from a country at risk and who must undergo a quarantine. These contact details are sent to the cantonal tracing unit.
Zurich State Councilor Mario Fehr, in charge of security, informed the media at Zurich airport on Wednesday about these measures. It is decisive that they are scrupulously respected: it is the only way to protect the population from Covid-19.
The contact details of people suspected of not having reported to the health authorities or not respecting the ten days of quarantine will be communicated to the police. If the non-compliance with these measures proves, a criminal denunciation is possible, with the key to a fine of up to 10,000 francs.
