– Today it has been decided that the European Union will start a training mission, i.e. representatives of EU countries will train the Ukrainian army. I would like to say that Hungary did not vote for this initiative, we will not take part in this mission, stated Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, quoted on Monday by Russian agencies.
He explained that Hungary is the only EU country to take such a position because “it does not support the steps leading to the escalation of the conflict, on the contrary, it favors the early start of peace negotiations”.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Budapest has been more on the side of Moscow than of Kiev. During the last election campaign, Prime Minister Viktor Orban promised that if his Fidesz was victorious, Hungary would not be drawn into the Russo-Ukrainian war and would not pay for its effects, which are felt throughout Europe.
EU training for Ukrainian soldiers
The training mission for the Ukrainian armed forces, approved by the EU Council, is scheduled to start in mid-November. Its goal is to train up to 15,000. military personnel. Training camps are to be located, among others in Poland and Germany, while the operational headquarters is to operate in Brussels.
The Russians argue that the states that train Ukrainian soldiers on their territory are breaking the convention on neutral countries, proving that they are directly involved in the conflict.
Russia does not call its actions against Ukraine a war, but a “special military operation” and demands that Kiev “demilitarize and denazify” the country. For informing about the situation on the front not as the Kremlin wishes (e.g. telling the truth about the killed Russian soldiers), he may be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
