A dramatic case of a transplant with a Covid-19 infected lung has now become known in the USA. The recipient developed a fever three days after the operation; her blood pressure dropped and her breathing became harder. As her condition worsened, doctors decided to test her for SARS-CoV-2. She was positive.
The patient from Michigan died 61 days after the double lung transplant of a multisystem organ failure caused by Covid-19 because the donor lung of an accident victim was infected with SARS-CoV-2.
The surgeon who inserted the donor lung also got infected with the virus, but later recovered.
According to the University of Michigan Medical School, this is the first recorded case of Covid-19 in the United States where the virus was transmitted via an organ transplant. Almost 40,000 transplants were performed last year.
The doctors had not found any signs of the disease in the donor, and she was tested negative with a nose and throat swab. “We would never have used the lungs if we had had a positive Covid test. All the screenings that we normally do and can do, we did this time too,” said Daniel Kaul, Director of the “Medicine’s transplant infectious disease service”, the himself in American Journal of Transplantation published a report on the case.
