Constipation is a very common digestive disorder that affects us regardless of age and generally occurs when you have less than three bowel movements a week. The American Gastroenterology Association recently published a study showing that some people, although they go to the toilet every day, may suffer from constipation. And that’s because the chairs are hard, dry or in very small quantities. On the other hand, other people who have bowel movements every two or even three days can be perfectly healthy. Constipation, which sets in because of certain foods you eat, because of stress, changes in the environment in which you live, is a fairly serious condition that can trigger stomach pain, bloating and nausea. However, if it lasts more than a few weeks, you can face much more serious diseases: hemorrhoids, colonic or rectal polyps, intestinal blockages, etc.
Olive oil is an effective treatment recommended for people suffering from constipation. It seems that this is mainly due to the natural fats that the oil contains. Thus, a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil taken every morning on an empty stomach can successfully treat constipation or prevent the recurrence of this digestive disorder. Be careful, though! A higher amount can lead to diarrhea and abdominal cramps. And one more thing to keep in mind: olive oil treatment for children is not recommended at all! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends, in this case, the consumption of a small amount of pear or apple juice or plum puree. Children over the age of three can eat high-fiber foods such as whole grains, plums, apricots, etc. If the situation does not improve, take the little one to the doctor.
