President of the United States Donald Trump gave the order to develop a new plan for imposing sanctions against Russia. This time, the American side called Moscow’s non-compliance with the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF). It is understood that restrictive measures will affect persons who, according to the White House, are responsible for the non-compliance of the Russian Federation with this agreement. As restrictive measures, inter alia, the blocking of transactions in the United States, the inability to obtain documents for entering the United States, as well as the cancellation of existing visas are offered.
New initiatives of the White House make us recall with nostalgia the times of the “cold war”. It was then that the USSR and the United States began the process of arms control and nuclear disarmament. Superpowers recognized the need to reduce the number of intercontinental missiles. And in 1987 they agreed on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. Under the reduction was a whole class of missiles with a range of damage from 500 to 1000 km and from 1,000 to 5,500 km. As a result, the threat of destroying all life on Earth in a global catastrophe has weakened. Few people thought even ten years ago that this threat again looms on the horizon.
In 2003, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the treaty on missile defense. We began actively deploying anti-missiles near Russian borders in the hope of “multiplying by zero” our nuclear deterrence potential. Now, obviously, it was the turn of the INF Treaty.
In recent years, three or four US officials have continually accused Russia of violating the provisions of the agreement. And the question of what, in fact, is attributed to the guilt, answered evasively: they themselves, they say, you know. President Trump went even further than his predecessors: he not only found the guilty, but also decided to immediately punish him.
In the Kremlin, as Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian president, said, they took this step of Washington with bewilderment. It was again emphasized that “Russia clearly fulfills all its obligations under the INF Treaty and intends to continue to comply with it”. The US, apparently, has other intentions.
“The accusations are blurred,” Colonel-General Victor EUSIN, a leading expert in the field of strategic armaments, ex-chief of the Main Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces (1994-1996), told MK. – There is no specifics as to what position of the treaty was not performed by Russia. We simply do not need our arguments. Everything has already been decided. And, therefore, the US withdrawal from the INF Treaty is more than real. ”
According to the expert, such a step could be deadly for international stability and security: “After the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the most important treaties and agreements, for example, a nuclear deal with Iran, and now more than likely from the INF, the credibility of this country can be definitive undermined. Why should someone, like North Korea, go to conclusion of agreements with Washington, if tomorrow they recognize this agreement as insignificant? ”
If the US withdraws from the INF Treaty, it will be possible to forget about the prolongation of the START III Russian-American Treaty after 2023, as Russia’s confidence in the US as a partner will be completely undermined, the expert concluded: “Washington’s actions in the field of international security resemble an elephant in a china shop , there is almost nothing left for the whole. “
