UEFA “Strongly condemns” the harassment of Michael Oliver and his wife after the English referee whistled a decisive penalty in favor of Real Madrid Wednesday, in the additional time of quarter-final return of the Champions League against Juventus . “We are in touch with them to offer them our support and we trust the competent authorities to take action against individuals who have behaved inappropriately on and outside social networks ” the European confederation said in a statement released Monday. British police opened an investigation on text messages received by Lucy Oliver, the wife of Michael, who also received many insults via Twitter, reported Saturday the BBC. The Juventus players, who had wiped out their three-goal deficit from the first leg, were furious with Oliver when he whistled a penalty for a foul from Mehdi Benatia on Merengue striker Lucas Vazquez. Cristiano Ronaldo converted him to come back to (1-3) and qualify Real for the semi-finals (4-3 overall).
