CAIRO – The Regional Director of the United Nations Children's Fund says the authorities in Yemen make it "impossible" to deliver and distribute urgently needed humanitarian aid to the country.

Geert Cappelaere says both the Yemeni government and the Houthi rebels are uncooperative. In an interview from Yemen, he told The Associated Press that preventing relief could accelerate the famine.

Cappelaere says, "The respective authorities do not enable us to do our work as fast as we should."

Yemen has been at war since March 2015, when Houthi rebels occupied northern regions and forced the government into exile. The Saudi Arabia-led coalition, which supports the exiled government, accuses the Houthis of serving as Iran's deputy. The coalition has carried out an extensive air campaign and caused thousands of deaths.
