IIn the dispute over the expansion of wind power and distances to houses, the Union has made a new proposal. After that, the planned 1000-meter distance of the wind turbines should now be based on development plans with designated settlement areas, as stated in a Union concept paper that was available to the Reuters news agency on Monday. According to an earlier bill from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, new wind turbines should have a minimum distance of 1000 meters from a settlement of five houses or more.
This was met with fierce resistance from the industry, but also with skepticism and criticism from the coalition partner SPD. According to party circles, the SPD now wants to examine the new proposal of the Union, whether more areas than the previous plans for wind turbines come into consideration with the departure of building numbers.
The Union proposal also provides that the federal states can make a distance of less than 1000 meters possible. The municipalities should also be allowed this in the course of new site planning.
In the first nine months of 2019, only around 350 wind turbines were newly approved on land. Three years ago, there were more than three times as many in that period. The reasons are, on the one hand, a lack of space and, on the other, resistance and lawsuits from neighboring citizens. This has already resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs in the industry. Therefore, the government wants to create more acceptance with new rules. The new proposals will also be the subject of a meeting between Chancellor Minister Helge Braun and country representatives on Thursday.
