WASHINGTON – The United States (US) is “convinced” that Iran attacked the commercial tanker, MV Pacific Zircon, off the coast of Oman on Tuesday (15/11/2022).

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan accused Tehran of using drones to carry out the attack.

“After reviewing available information, we believe Iran likely carried out this attack using UAVs, a lethal capability that is increasingly being used directly and through proxies across the Middle East and proliferated to Russia for use in Ukraine,” Sullivan said in a statement.

Last month, Washington condemned Russia’s use of Iranian drones in Ukraine.

The US State Department reported having evidence of Iranian drones being used to attack Ukrainian civilians and critical civilian infrastructure. Tehran continues to deny the fact that its drones were used in Ukraine.

Sullivan added, “There is no justification for these attacks, which are the latest pattern of such behavior and broader destabilizing activity. These acts further threaten the freedom of navigation through this important waterway, international shipping and commerce, and the lives of those on board the ships involved.”

The attack comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Iran, as well as regional tensions with Tehran.

Gulf waters in recent years have experienced several attacks on tankers.

Many of them blame Iran while Tehran usually denies responsibility.
