US senators introduced a bill on new anti-Russian sanctions

MOSCOW, February 14 – RIA News. US senators drafted a bill on new restrictive measures against Russia, in particular, in connection with the incident in the Kerch Strait. The document provides for sanctions against the shipbuilding sector and state energy projects.

According to the bill, restrictive measures should affect 24 "FSB agents" who took part in the detention of Ukrainian sailors who illegally crossed the Russian border in the Kerch Strait.

Senators also proposed sanctions against Russian banks, which, according to lawmakers, "support efforts to undermine democratic institutions in other countries."

In addition, the document proposes restrictive measures against the Russian cyber sector. In addition, senators are calling on the State Department to decide whether "Russia should be considered a sponsor of terrorism."

The bill caused a negative reaction from members of both houses of the Russian parliament. Thus, Senator Franz Klintsevich said that the sanctions planned by Washington are not related to the Kerch Strait, but merely a continuation of the "long tradition" of the anti-Russian policy of the United States.

Member of the Federation Council Vladimir Dzhabarov promised that Moscow will introduce countermeasures if the new American sanctions come into force.

"We have something to answer. We will use the available resources – I am convinced of this," he stressed.

According to the parliamentarian, the new restrictive measures will not cause significant damage to the industry specified in the bill. He added that in five years, Russia has successfully learned to resist sanctions.

In the State Duma, in turn, doubted that the bill is really implemented. The deputy chairman of the international affairs committee, Alexei Chepa, expressed confidence that such a proposal for the “insane campaign” would not work in the Senate.

Also, according to the deputy, Washington will continue, as he did in the past, to build a policy of restrictive measures against those states that "do not play by the American rules."
