The US State Department spokesman, Ned Price, said that the initiative of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Abdullah Bathily, regarding the elections in Libya enjoys the full support of the UN Security Council.
The spokesman considered that this support provides Libyan leaders with the best opportunity to end the unrest and secure legitimacy through elections.
“We urge Libyan leaders to work with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to build on progress and conclude an agreement for a stable and democratic future,” he said.
Bathili presented an initiative on February 27, in a briefing to the Security Council, to organize and hold legislative and presidential elections during the current year 2023.
He said that he would establish a high-level steering committee for Libya. This proposed mechanism would bring together all Libyan stakeholders, including representatives of political institutions, key political figures, tribal leaders, civil society organizations, security forces, women and youth.
The UN envoy added that the adoption of a legal framework, a road map and a specific timetable for holding the 2023 elections will be facilitated.
He said the commission would provide a platform to promote consensus on related issues such as election security and the adoption of a code of conduct for all candidates.
