Val de Marne. Villejuif inaugurates its Colette-Besson sports hall in the presence of Nelson Montfort

The City of Villejuif (Val-de-Marne) will inaugurate its new sports hall, named Colette-Besson.

“A real asset”

Four years of work were necessary to build this building. The provisional cost of the operation is 7.5 million euros. It was funded by the Departmental Council of Val de Marne (1.98 million euros), the national sports agency (700,000 euros) and the Region Ile-de-France (260,000 euros). For the City of Villejuif of the “first gymnasium in Villejuif with a 350-seat stand. A real asset for the sports world, which will be able to organize high-level competitions in Villejuif ”.

Who was Colette Besson, a great French sportswoman?

The Sports Hall, Colette-Besson, pays tribute to this great French athlete, nicknamed the “little fiancée of France” who won the gold medal in the 400m at the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968. French champion in the 400m in 1967, she had an exceptional record: several times French indoor champion, European champion and vice-champion, gold medalist over 400m in 1968, holder of the world record for 4 x 400m in 1969. A course of excellence, the name of which is part of the desire to feminize the names of equipment and roads in Villejuif.

The Colette-Besson Sports Hall was designed as a multisport facility, “with adequate markings and infrastructure to accommodate as many disciplines as possible”. The City of Villejuif explains “that it also has a climbing wall, a weight room, fitness and re-conditioning, a club house and changing rooms for the footballers of the Villejuif club. “.

On the inauguration program

The inauguration will take place in the presence of Colette Besson’s family. the sports journalist Nelson Montfort will comment live on the 1968 Mexico City race. Several activities will be offered throughout the evening, which will allow participants to test themselves on the climbing wall.

The Sports Hall, located between the Youri-Gagarin nautical stadium, the Karl-Marx stadium and the Paul-Dubuisson bowling alley, is intended to complete the city’s sports infrastructure and thus serve the 60 clubs in the town.
