Van den Goorbergh (16) was shocked by many audiences at TT: ‘Normally I don’t notice anything’ | NOW

Zonta van den Goorbergh was a bit dazed at the start of the TT in Assen. The sixteen-year-old debutant in Moto2 was shocked that he suddenly had to think of those 100,000 people in the stands.

“Normally I don’t even realize that there is an audience, then I am completely focused on the moment the lights go out,” said Van den Goorbergh, who finished eighteenth.

“I also don’t know why I was suddenly aware of it. Maybe because there were a lot more fans for me now. I didn’t get too attracted to it, because I also know that the public should not distract you. “

Van den Goorbergh was satisfied with his place in the top twenty. “Secretly I hoped for more and I unnecessarily lost a place in the end, but I was able to drive on a mistake in the first lap after a tight pace. There is clearly improvement.”

Father Jurgen overcome with emotions at the start

His father Jurgen van den Goorbergh was able to prove this with figures. “We are working towards a 25 second gap on the winner and there were 28. At the start of the season the difference was one minute, so Zonta has already halved it. He can’t complain,” he said.

At the start, the former road racer could not control his emotions. “Big tears, yes. That was a difficult moment. I have been here myself for twenty years and now my son is there. I saw that audience and it took me by surprise. It was mainly the tension.”

“We’ve been looking forward to the TT all week and it’s not that easy that you can race in the world championship. There’s a lot to it and then Zonta makes it happen. He just had a very solid weekend and I say that with bravado.”

The Moto2 race in Assen was won by Spaniard Augusto Fernández. Bo Bendsneyder crossed the finish line in fifth place.
