ROME – Inter Milan football players defended the Italian Cup on Wednesday. In the final at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, they defeated Fiorentina 2:1, Lautaro Martínez scored both goals.
Slovakian Milan Škriniar also participated in winning the trophy, who intervened in the match of the 4th round against the second division Parma (2:1 pp). Internazionale won the ninth domestic cup in history and went for the treble.
Fiorentina surprised the favorites in the third minute when they broke a pass and Jonathan Ikone found Nicolas Gonzalez at the far post. He beat captain Samir Handanović with a sharp shot from the first.
The answer came shortly before half an hour of the game – Fiorentina’s defense did not guard Martinez and he scored alone in front of goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano. The same player gave his team the lead moments later from the edge of the five after a short cross from Nicola Barella.
After the break, Inter didn’t let the opponent do anything and was cautious on the offensive. In the second half, Romelu Lukaku came on, he replaced Edin Džeko on the left wing and twenty minutes later he sent a promising pass to Robin Gosens.
Two minutes later, on the other side, Handanovič eliminated a promising attempt by Luka Jovic, and the same player missed the opportunity to head into the open goal. Fiorentina did not use another chance after the opponent’s goalkeeper hesitated, when he extinguished the situation in front of an empty Matteo Darmian goal.
In this way, Inter got ready for the Champions League final in June, in which they will face Manchester City. Former captain Škriniar does not play for the team for a long time due to a back injury and ends at San Siro after this season.
Fiorentina missed out on their first trophy since 2001, when they won their sixth Italian Cup. He will have another opportunity on June 7 in the European Conference League (EKL) final against West Ham United.
