Videos of Annecy Attack Circulate on Social Media, Gendarmerie Warns of Criminal Sanctions for Sharing Violence Content

Terrible, unbearable images. Several videos of the attack which left six injured this Thursday around 9:30 a.m. in Annecy circulating on social networks, in particular Twitter and Telegram.

Among them, one even more atrocious than the others: we can see the assailant – bermudas and black t-shirt, white sneakers, blue turban on his head, beard, sunglasses and knife in hand -, trying to attack several people in the park.

In the screams of the victims, he achieves his ends, notably hitting one or more children lying on the ground, in a stroller, right next to a playground. In these images, we can also see the heroic gesture of a witness who tries to intervene despite the danger.

Penals sanctions

In another video, the assailant can also be heard shouting in English “In the name of Jesus Christ” while holding some sort of medallion, possibly a Christian symbol ahead BFM TV.

On Twitter, the gendarmerie asks Internet users not to share or like “shocking content” on social networks”. “One reflex: report them on the Pharos platform.” The police also recall that those “who broadcast and share videos showing violence to people are exposed to criminal sanctions”.

The assailant was arrested. He is of Syrian nationality. According to a source close to the case, the man, in his thirties, was not known to the police and his motives remain undetermined for the time being.

The latest report shows six injured: four children and two adults. Two children and an adult have a vital prognosis.
