Vilassar de Mar publishes a book on the contemporary history of the municipality

The town hall of Vilassar de Mar (Maresme) has just presented in the framework of St. George’s Day the book “Forty years of democratic town halls in Vilassar de Mar (1979-2019)”. The work, written by journalist Josep Bernabeu, reviews the contemporary history of the municipality under the impetus of democratic city councils. Conceived as a journalistic chronicle, the book rigorously describes the political action of the different democratic municipal governments, an action that over four decades has caused “an unprecedented economic, social and urban transformation in the municipality,” says the author.

According to Bernabeu, this book “fills a great void, since until its publication, almost all the available bibliography on Vilassar de Mar ended in the 50s, 60s or 70s of the last century.” The work is structured in two large blocks. The first is dedicated to the people who “with the successes and errors of all political action have acted as the engine of change that has transformed Vilassar”, says the author. All the elected positions (86 men and 33 women) and all the government and opposition teams ordered by municipal mandates appear in detail: eleven in total, between 1979 and 2019.

The six mayors of the democracy that Vilassar de Mar has had – Jeroni Marsal (PSC), Jordi Garcia (PSC), Josep M. Núñez (CiU), Pere Almera (PSC), Quim Ferrer (CiU) and Damià del Clot (ERC )– also have their own section, where their government action is analyzed. This information is complemented by another section in which the results of the different candidacies that have participated in all the municipal elections held in the town over these forty years are interpreted.

The second block of the book focuses on the analysis of the government action of the different teams that have directed the consistory in fields of action as diverse as public space, urban planning, infrastructure, facilities, social projects, modernization administration, services or economic promotion, among many others. This block also includes abundant photographic material that shows how the municipality has changed during the period studied.
