Vilnius district police detained 6 suspects: smuggled cigarettes were found inside the building blocks

by archyw

Detainees were found to have illegally disposed of 10,379 packs of cigarettes worth more than € 360,000, police said.

A pre-trial investigation was initiated against the detained persons in accordance with Article 199 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania. 2 d. “Illegal Disposal of Excisable Goods”, organized and controlled by the Prosecutor of the Second Prosecution Division of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The court, following the prosecutor’s request, imposed two of the detainees on the most severe measure of detention for one month.

In order to disguise their illegal activities, the suspects used technology that allowed cigarettes to be hidden inside building blocks that were not visually different from real building materials. In this way, the suspects hoped to escape the attention of law enforcement agencies and successfully sell illegal goods.

However, the suspects’ plan failed, and the efforts of police officers prevented a large number of cigarettes from entering the shadow market, which would have generated high-value illicit proceeds from the organizers and perpetrators of the crime.

Persons detained for illegal disposal of high value excisable goods (Article 199² (2) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania) face a fine or imprisonment for up to eight years.
