We tested: Logitech’s high-end keyboard and mouse

The Vaud-based manufacturer of computer peripherals has renewed its Master MX range for Mac and PC, which remains a benchmark.

The two new peripherals in Logitech’s MX Master line.

The wireless mechanical keyboards of the Master range, the MX Mechanical, MX Mechanical Mini, are first of all magnificent objects. We have something solid between our fingers. The design, combining two shades of gray, is just as successful. Those accustomed to night work will find their account with 6 backlighting modes (static, pulsation, contrast, pulsation, waves, reaction, random) whose brightness varies automatically according to ambient light.

These keyboards with mechanical keys and switches give free rein to “manly” and precise keystrokes. This corresponds perfectly to the core target targeted by Logitech with this product: hardcore gamers reconverted to office or creative software suites.

Logitech leaves the choice of a configuration at the time of purchase with the MX Mechanical and MX Mechanical Mini models, each available in three slightly different versions. For French-speaking Switzerland and its qwertz keyboard, the choice is limited to the “silent touch” configuration. With its ultra-flat mechanical switches (switches), it stays quieter than traditional mechanical keyboards from Logitech. It’s still largely audible, but the noise is certainly part of the charm of this type of mechanical keyboard.

Via the Logi Plus software, it is possible to customize some of the upper keys of the keyboard. The MX Mechanical are recharged via a USB-C port with a promised autonomy of 15 days with backlighting and 10 months without. The recommended prices start at 170 francs.

Swiss precision

An obviously winning form is not changed. With its MX Master 3S wireless mouse model, Logitech has simply improved its model 3, thus maintaining the same form factor of this mouse designed above all to accompany desktop computers.

Like the model that preceded it, the mouse is very comfortable, fits well in the hand and allows you to perform precise gestures with few movements. We still appreciate the MagSpeed scroll wheel introduced with the MX Master 3 model and based on an electromagnetic mechanism made in Switzerland. Its notched scrolling mode unfolds without friction and remains almost inaudible. As for the ordinary scrolling mode, it allows you to browse 1000 lines per second according to the Swiss manufacturer. Thanks to its optical sensor, it is possible to adjust the speed of the pointer up to 8000 dpi. The mouse can work on any surface, but it remains a mouse first thought to stay on the desk next to the computer and high resolution screens at the risk of losing its comfort of use. On this last point, access to the side scroll bar and its comfort can be a matter of discussion in the event of regular use.

As with the keyboard, noise is a very present theme at Logitech to promote its mouse. The manufacturer highlights that the clicks of the MX 3S model are 90% quieter compared to its predecessor. Not enough to silence her if that’s what we’re looking for. Rechargeable via the USB-C port, the mouse has a promised autonomy of 70 days. It takes about 140 fr. for this high-end model.

Confused connection

We have enough to get lost in the connectivity and configuration software at Logitech. We are not talking about Bluetooth compatibility, but about the proprietary wireless technologies Logitech Unifying and Logi Bolt and their receivers.

The connection options palette can be confusing.

Insiders will certainly find their way around easily to get the full potential of the MX Master range with the Logi Bolt receiver. Others may spend time doing the difference between connection types, or even looking for the pairing key on the keyboard when it doesn’t light up. We are still far from plug and play and installation in a few mouse clicks.

The new Logi Options+ software, with the integrated Flow function (to switch peripherals between different computers), could make things easier in the future, even if we have seen more playful interfaces.

Verdict

The quality is there, both for the new mechanical keyboards and the mouse. Not sure it’s worth swapping the MX 3 mouse released in 2019 for the 3S model. However, these objects respond to very specific activities and/or preferences that will not disappoint the people who have knowingly chosen them.
