Weather warning: thunderstorms, hail and gusts of wind. When and the regions most at risk

Milan – After a small respite, the bad weather in Lombardy. The approach of a disturbance from northwestern Europe, during the next night, will cause a brief but marked worsening of the meteorological conditions on the Italian North-West, in particular on the northern areas of Lombardy e Piedmont. Only a few days ago, between Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September, a violent wave of bad weather hit the entire Lombardy region causing inconvenience and flooding.

The alert is triggered

Based on the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which are responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions. The weather phenomena, impacting on the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).




What the forecasts say

The notice provides from today evening, Tuesday 28 September, rainfall, with a prevalent character of backhand or thunderstormand, on the northern sectors of Piedmont and Lombardy. The phenomena will be accompanied by reversals of strong intensity, local hailstorms, frequent and strong electrical activity gusts of wind. On the basis of the expected and ongoing phenomena, a yellow alert was assessed for tomorrow, Wednesday 29 September, in Calabria and in sectors of Piedmont, Lombardy and Sicily.

The “tropicalization”

Summer 2021, which has just ended, yes it’s close with almost 1300 storms, water bombs, tornadoes, hailstorms and lightning storms increasing by 58% compared to last year and devastating effects on cities and countryside. This is an average of more than 14 extreme events a day along the entire Peninsula where the effects of the tropicalization of the climate are felt, confirmed by the trend of increasing temperature with the summer of 2021 which is classified from a climatological point of view as the sixth warmer since 1800 with a temperature 1.55 degrees higher than the average, according to Isac Cnr data. The effect of climate change with the alternation of droughts and floods has caused Italian agriculture to lose almost 2 billion euros in 2021 between droughts and floods.

The information

The meteorological framework and the critical issues forecast for Italy is updated daily on the basis of new forecasts and the evolution of the phenomena, and is available on the website of the Department of Civil Protection (www.protezionecivile.gov.it), together with the general rules of behavior to be taken in case of bad weather. The information on the regional alert levels, on the specific criticalities that could affect the individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will monitor the evolution of the situation.
