Former Wales center Jamie Roberts has signed a one-year contract with the South African franchise for the Stormers, which operates in Super Rugby. “It was one of my long-time goals to play in the southern hemisphere and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better place to do it than in Cape Town, where people are so passionate about their rugby and in this city which is incredible, “Roberts said in a statement. New Stormers coach John Dobson said Roberts’ experience would be invaluable as the team lost center Springbok world champion Damian de Allende to Japanese club Panasonic Wild Knights.
Roberts, 33, who also wore the colors of Racing 92 between 2013 and 2015, played the last of his 97 test matches with the XV of Leek in 2017 and participated in tours of South Africa and Australia of the British Lions and Irish. The Stormers start their Super Rugby season at home against the Wellington Hurricanes on February 1.
