First only bench press, then injured – Leo Bittencourt (27) was recently downhill at Werder.
But after his substitution in the cup semi-final against Leipzig (1: 2 nV) the offensive man reported back.
In extra time, Bittencourt used a big goat from Dayot Upamecano, ran freely towards the Leipzig goal and rounded keeper Peter Gulacsi. Then he slipped the ball into the goal to equalize 1: 1.
Bittencourt missed the last two league games due to ankle problems.
But even before the injury, coach Florian Kohfeldt had often done without his former dream player (cost 7 million euros transfer fee). More than short assignments were not possible. Bittencourt was last in the starting line-up on March 10 against Bielefeld (2-0).
He has been a member of the team council since this season and actually has the right to be a regular player. Will the cup goal give him more time in the league’s final sprint?
In any case, Bittencourt is hot about the relegation final: “We gave the answer and we have to do that in the next games, otherwise it’ll go down!”
