What can we expect from Milan in the upcoming 2022-23 season?

AC Milan enjoyed a fantastic 2021-22 season as they clinched the A league title. Milan needed a win on the final day of the season to guarantee top spot and delivered the title in style as they beat Sassuolo 3-0 away.

All the goals came in the first half and it was a tremendous performance, which summed up Milan’s season nicely. The question is, what can we expect from Milan in the 2022-23 campaign?

Fresh faces at Milanello

It is crucial Milan build on their success of last season by improving their squad. Alessandro Florenzi and Junior Messias may stay for next season but it is not guaranteed. Jens Petter Hauge and Franck Kessie have left the club.

There have been strong rumours of a move for Noa Lang from Club Brugge and Renato Sanches from LOSC Lille, the latter of which would replace Kessie in central midfield. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out of contract so a new striker would be required if he does not renew his deal. Divock Origi, formerly of Liverpool, should sign on a free transfer.

Better results in the Champions League

Winning the Champions League in the coming season is going to be a big ask for Milan. However, they will want to improve on their display in the previous campaign which saw them finish bottom of Group B, with only one victory to their name.

It was a tough group with LiverpoolAtletico Madrid, and Porto but Milan were expected to have done better. This coming season, as champions of Italy, they need to qualify for the knockout stages. Clearly the quality of the group will have an influence and being in the pot of first seeds will help in that regard.

Fighting for domestic trophies

Milan were excellent in Serie A last season and the main aim of the coming season will be to regain their title. If they can do that at the expense of the Coppa Italia, the fans would be happy.

However, Milan will want to remain in every competition for as long as possible and keep their fans hopeful of a league and cup double. Losing to rivals Inter at the semi-final stage of the Coppa Italia last season was a major disappointment and Milan will hope to rectify that in the coming campaign.

More of the same from Pioli and his staff

Stefano Pioli arrived at the San Siro in October 2019 on a temporary deal until the end of the season. Pioli signed a two-year extension in July 2020 and guided Milan to a second-place finish in his first full season in charge.

He went one better in 2021-22 and landed Milan their first Serie A title since 2011 and Pioli’s first trophy as a manager. Both Pioli and assistant Giacomo Murelli will remain at Milan next season in the hope of continued success.

An improved side

Milan were brilliant in Serie A last season but they cannot afford to rest. The likes of Inter, Juventus, and Napoli will already be plotting their downfall in the upcoming campaign. The addition of a couple of new faces will help keep things fresh and provide the manpower required to stay at the top.

Milan will be the team to beat, which means there will be a change in mentality from the previous campaign. Everyone wants to get one over the champions and Milan will have to be prepared for some tough battles, especially away from home.

Milan are back where they want to be, at the top of Italian football. Since 2001-02, only three clubs have won the Italian title, with Juventus and Inter being the other two teams.

Therefore, Milan can expect a strong challenge from those teams and cannot afford to let standards drop in Serie A, but also need to focus on improving in the Champions League. Milan have been nothing but exciting.
