What is WhatsApp’s “Linked Devices” option for | Technology

The linking of devices with WhatsApp to be able to use the app in other places than the mobile is one of the most interesting additions to the application owned by Facebook. Now, do you know how it works?

As you may already know, WhatsApp has recently introduced multi-device support for almost all its clients on both iOS and Android. Thanks to the platform’s multi-device capabilities, you can use it on your computer whenever you’re away from your smartphone.

Anyway, you will have to link your other devices to WhatsApp through your smartphone. Nevertheless, once this is done, you will no longer need your phone for everything to work properly.

Before, your linked devices relied on your phone to connect to your WhatsApp account. This meant your other devices couldn’t encrypt data or initiate calls through the app. All they could do was mirror your phone, but it kept doing everything.

However, how is it linked? If we have Android, these are the steps to follow:

  • Open WhatsApp on your phone.
  • Tap More options > Paired devices.
  • Tap pair a device.
  • Unlock your phone: If your device has biometric authentication, follow the onscreen instructions. If not, you will be prompted to enter the pin you use to unlock the phone.
  • Point your phone at the screen of the device you want to pair to scan the QR code.

In the event that we have an iPhone, it is just as simple, unlike the fact that we will use Touch ID or Face ID to unlock.

How does WhatsApp sync multiple devices? It’s simple. When an additional device is linked, the main device encrypts all your messages from the last three months of chats.

It then transfers them to the new paired device using an end-to-end encrypted message. From then on, the newly added device can access the message history from its own database.

Unfortunately, There is a limitation in iOS that does not allow you to delete messages or conversation threads from a paired device. The other limitation is that you still can’t link a secondary tablet or smartphone.

To check the feature, update to the latest version of WhatsApp and tap on the menu with the three dots. Then tap “Paired Devices” and turn on the feature so you can try them out.
