The prices for petrol and diesel are currently being raised at German petrol stations by up to five times over the course of the day. Economists at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main have discovered a new price pattern and found that the fuel in the morning is once again more expensive, as the university tells.
When to refuel the cheapest
It is well known that petrol prices at filling stations fluctuate widely within a day. Most recently, prices were typically increased significantly in the morning, at noon, in the afternoons and evenings, and gradually reduced again in between. However, since the beginning of April, the petrol stations have once again raised prices for gasoline and diesel in the morning.

For this reason, also the times of the day, to which favorable fueled can, changed. Consumers refuel before the price increase rounds, ie typically at the following times:
- between 9 and 10 o'clock
- between 12 and 13 o'clock
- between 15 and 16 o'clock
- between 20 and 21 o'clock
This is how the price fluctuations come about
The price fluctuations within one day are up to ten cents per liter at the same gas station.
The regular price cycles come about because the petrol stations, according to the economists by mutual undercutting try to lure the customers from the competition. Once a low price level is reached, underbidding is no longer worthwhile. It follows a strong price increase and the game begins again.
