Hardware news Which graphics card for Red Dead Redemption 2? Our video tests
This is one of the most beautiful open-world games released on home consoles and is now available on PC, in a technically even more successful version. Of course we are talking about Red Dead Redemption 2. The massive game of Rockstar can now shoot in 4K at 60 FPS, but still need to have the competition machine that goes well.
Indeed, to enjoy it in these conditions, it will be necessary to equip a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, the most powerful graphic card of the market, and to cut on the graphic settings. In addition, at our level of settings for these tests, the title will instead turn around 55 FPS. Fortunately, this PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a large amount of settings, that can be modified at will to achieve the best possible balance between performance and visual quality. Note that the game even offers to use the Vulkan API or DirectX 12. Vulkan is selected by default, but the difference in performance between the two remains low.
12 graphics cards on the test bench
For this technical test, we launched the game on a PC with a Ryzen 7 3800X processor and 16 GB of RAM, then on 12 different graphics cards. The setting level has been set to "balanced", which seems to be the best compromise between fluidity and display quality. To note that the title incorporates a very comprehensive performance test, which offers both very large landscapes, climatic effects, action scenes and the city. Our results are based on that. Feel free also to take a look at the price chart at the end of this article, which offers a selection of graphics cards at different merchants.
In these conditions and in Ultra HD, Red Dead Redemption 2 turns over 35 FPS on few cards and you will need a RTX 2060 Super and more at Nvidia or a Radeon RX 5700 or 5700 XT at AMD. In WQHD, 2560 x 1440 pixels, the title of Rockstar fared much better and no doubt that it is this definition that will be used in most cases. The title runs at 40 FPS and more on many mid-range graphics cards.
Finally, in Full HD, you will enjoy 60 FPS and more on a large majority of recent graphics cards. Note that graphics cards with 4 GB of video memory, and less, can not exceed the WQHD in definition. Our Radeon RX 580 and our GTX 1050 Ti have paid the price.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is clearly one of the most greedy games you can install on your PC, but we salute the effort made on the amount of graphics options, which allows a wide variety of configurations to enjoy in good conditions. And especially, this PC version is simply beautiful, thanks to several improvements over the console versions : greater viewing distance, reworked light effects, more realistic shadows … In Ultra HD, rarely has a game touched photorealism so closely. And if you're not equipped with a state-of-the-art graphics card, the Rockstar title still offers enough options to enjoy it in great conditions.
In short, if the studio recommends at least a GTX 1060 or RX 480, we advise you to invest in a newer card, like the GTX 1660 Super or the Radeon RX 5700. Of course, the more you go upmarket, more play in 4K will be within your reach. In any case, this is an excellent opportunity to update your PC, if it is not already done.
