It’s not even twelve football fields big, and it’s really not more than a rock. But Snake Island is now the focus of a fierce battle between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Already in the first hours of the war, the island was one of the main targets of Russia. Now its defense costs a lot of men and equipment. Snake Island may be unsightly small and desolate, but it is of vital strategic importance. Even for NATO.
