Preparation of Pfizer BioNTech vaccine doses against Covid-19 @WilliamPham
The summer holidays are approaching and the cases of Covid-19 are on the rise again. In this situation, will it be necessary to go through a new booster dose of vaccine?
Weekly figures show an upsurge in Covid-19 cases in France and Lyon. Faced with this situation, Professor Alain Fischer, immunologist, president of the orientation council for the vaccine strategy, calls for the resumption of vaccination, in particular for those aged 60 and over.
The level of immunity is no longer optimal
In an interview with the JDD, the scientist believes that faced with this new wave, “the level of immunity of the population is good but not perfect”. In particular, it offers “recommend a second booster for over 60s and fragile people”. These are mainly targeted because their immune system and memory are less strong in the face of Covid-19. “Their level of protection is no longer optimal”, believes Alain Fischer. According to the data he puts forward, doing a new booster dose can raise protection against serious forms of the virus to more than 90%.
Limit hospital pressure
The immunologist also reiterates that vaccination makes it possible to fight against hospital pressure. “Even if this virus is not more virulent, the increase in the number of vas mechanically leads to more hospitalizations and deaths”. Acknowledging that vaccines have a “transient” effect, he nevertheless believes that “vaccination will make it possible to pass the course of this seventh wave”. For him, a fourth booster dose is akin to prevention: “like the annual visit to the dentist or the ophthalmologist”.
