With a Boeing 787, Air Europa announces the most sustainable flight in its history

Air Europa made the greenest flight in its history last Friday (6th), with the aim of constantly adopting sustainable environmental solutions that accelerate innovation and lead to the reduction of aviation’s impact on the environment. This initiative is part of the project “The Sustainable Flight Challenge”, launched by the alliance SkyTeam for its partner airlines. The expectation is that the sector accelerates innovation and changes, minimizing the impact on the environment.

This challenge consists of a friendly competition between the companies of the alliance, which can participate in up to 14 different categories through the application of advanced solutions of responsibility, with the objective that the most successful are constantly adopted whenever possible, to advance without compromise the environment.

Air Europa’s most sustainable flight was operated on May 6 between Madrid and Gran Canaria, both in Spain, with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline acquired biofuel produced from vegetable oil at the Petronor refinery in Bilbao, as one of the pending measures to advance the decarbonization of the sector.

The aircraft used, with capacity for 339 passengers, belongs to one of the most efficient models on the market, capable of reducing emissions and fuel consumption by 20%, thanks to its aerodynamics and the most innovative technology. In addition, the Boeing 787-9 also reduces the acoustic impact by 60%, which means that noise in cities close to airports will also be reduced.

The operation of this flight, which was carried out on the most efficient route with a joint team, also included a more sustainable ground procedure.

Groundforce, an airport handling services company, used its vehicles equipped with the latest technology for all ground operations, on departure and arrival of a flight. In turn, Enaire, air navigation manager in Spain, collaborated in carrying out the continuous ascent and descent procedures, as well as the most ideal trajectory for efficient fuel consumption and, therefore, a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

On board, Air Europa has activated many sustainable practices that are already common in its operations. One of them was the use of biodegradable materials, as a phase prior to the progressive and total implementation of “zero plastic on board”, as well as the correct separation of waste, a measure that the airline has applied since 2006, not only in its offices. , but also on all your flights. During the operation, a sustainable and healthy menu was offered, made with seasonal and zero-kilometer products – a short supply chain – that reinforce care for the environment and improve the economy.

The airline distributed a survey to passengers who were on board using tracing paper, with which a small garden will later be created at the company’s headquarters.

It should be remembered that Air Europa, in its commitment to environmentally friendly economic growth, already applies multiple practices that have helped to improve the efficiency of its flights and meet the ICAO strategic objective (International Civil Aviation Organization) to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 2% per year. These include creating a fuel consumption and applying associated emissions data; the implementation of the Saco de Voo Eletrônico project; the creation of a regular fuel committee or participation in aviation working groups.

In addition to operating its greenest flight, Air Europa involved and worked together with air and airport navigation providers and managers, who showed their willingness to mitigate the consequences of climate change in the field of commercial aviation.

Inspired by the aerial competitions that linked Melbourne and London in 1934, “The Sustainable Flight Challenge” seeks to unite the entire aviation industry to take immediate action through innovation. The aim is to reduce aviation’s impact on the environment and spread transformative ideas that can be shared with other players in the industry. In this way, it intends to contribute to providing solutions to the industry to reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact.
