WHAT IS POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common disease affecting the function of a woman's ovaries.
The three main functions of PCOS are:
- Irregular periods – ie the ovaries do not give eggs regularly (ovulation). This can affect a woman's ability to become pregnant.
- Excessive androgen – High levels of "male hormones" in the body that can cause physical signs such as excessive facial or body hair.
- Polycystic Ovaries – The ovaries are enlarged and contain many fluid-filled blisters (follicles) that surround the eggs (it is important to note that despite the name PCOS has no cysts if you have PCOS).
