Cameroon have qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup thanks to a goal from Ajara Nchout in the fifth minute of injury time. The team won their third group game against New Zealand 2-1 (0-0) and secured themselves with three points the third place in Group E.
Although Cameroon are tied to Nigeria, the third best team in Group A, they have a better goal difference. This makes Cameroon one of the four best group stages to move into the knockout round. New Zealand has left without a point.
Nchout scored the lead for Cameroon in the 57th minute, which was already in the second round at the moment. However, Aurelle Awona's (80 ') own goal seemed to crush the team's fate, but Nchout saved Cameroon's second in the last sixteen (90' + 5 ').
Cameroon and New Zealand were especially intent on defensive stability at the beginning of the match. The first chances belonged to Cameroon's Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné, who failed to score goalkeeper Erin Nayler from the edge of the box (12) and a lift (19). Just before the break New Zealand came to his first chance. Goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom had no problems with Ria Percival's shot from distance of 20 meters (40 ').
After half-time Cameroon often came to scoring opportunities and rewarded: Nchout was played half-high in the penalty area, dropped her opponent and pushed from ten meters to 1-0 (57th). Shortly thereafter Cameroon could have come up with a threefold chance. But Onguéné failed from a few meters twice to Nayler, the second margin set Michaela Abam to the outside net (65).
New Zealand became more offensive and came home with a header from substitute Betsy Hasset (75 '). Moments later, Katie Bowen threw a half-high ball into the box, which Awona wanted to knock off. The defender hit the ball so badly that he landed in his own goal (80.). Cameroon worried about the knockout round, but Nchout scored the redeeming goal in the last minute.
