On this International Safe Abortion Day, France strongly reaffirms that every woman must dispose of her body with full autonomy. It expresses its solidarity with all women, still too numerous, who are deprived of this right and calls on the entire international community to take the necessary measures to ensure that women can enjoy their sexual and reproductive rights and health without hindrance. even in emergency or crisis situations.
The right to abortion is a fundamental right, inherent in the right to freely dispose of one’s own body. It is essential to achieve gender equality and must be exercised in conditions of safety, respect and dignity. The disregard for this right forces some women to resort to so-called “clandestine” abortions carried out in dangerous sanitary conditions. In some parts of the world, it is estimated that these abortions cause more than 10% of pregnant deaths.
At the Generation Equality Forum, held in Paris in June 2021 and organized jointly with UN Women and Mexico, France reaffirmed its commitment to the rights of women and girls, which is at the center of its feminist diplomacy. In this context, it has announced an aid of 5 million euros to the ODAS Center (Organization du Dialogue pour l’Avortement Sécurisé), run by the non-governmental organization Ipas, to improve access to safe abortion in West and Central Africa.
