The past 2019 was again a record year for him Barcelona-El Prat airport: The 5% growth compared to the previous year resulted in 52,686,512 air travelers passing through its three terminals: the T1, on its tenth operational anniversary, the T2, which has recovered bellows after a few years at medium gas and also the corporate terminal, the most remote, discrete and the one that throws a series of peculiar data by the profile of its users: owners of executive aircraft or clients of corporate aviation and aerotaxis companies. All in 344,558 operations, or what is the same an average of 943 daily takeoffs or landings.
Vueling, undisputed leader
The figures left by 2019 show that Vueling remains the unbeatable leader of the facility: of the 52.6 million passengers last year, 20.3 did it on planes of the company born in Barcelona in 2004 and that today remains the big bet of the IAG group for El Prat. Vueling has a dense network of flights that make Barcelona one of the best communicated airports in Europe thanks, in large part, to this airline that has 121 airplanes and that in number of passengers transported is followed by Ryanair, although already great distance: 7.8 million travelers opted for the Irish to arrive or leave Barcelona by air aboard a homogeneous fleet of Boeing 737-800 operating from T2.
From the same terminal the third airline flies in number of passengers of this facility: easyJet, one of the carriers that has suffered the most from Brexit's undefined and that to avoid unexpected surprises created an EU-based division to continue operating between countries of the union in the case of an exit without agreement between Brussels and London that could have stopped its operations. This has meant that under the umbrella of the same commercial brand there are three different companies: one British, one Austrian and one third Swiss. Among all, they have added 3.6 million travelers in Barcelona during 2019. In the fourth position, Norwegian and Iberia have tied almost in number of passengers in El Prat: 1.7 million customers, although here are some nuances: Norwegian adds the of European and intercontinental flights in two divisions of the company although under the same brand, while in the statistics of Aena, in the 1,761,680 that flew with Iberia in 2019 both travelers from Barcelona-Madrid-Barcelona flights are included, which is the only route that this company makes on its own, such as those of Level to different destinations in America, since since its foundation, Level is a commercial brand, although all long-haul flights are operatively from El Prat and are considered 100% Iberia, as the Airbus A330 fleet is, for the moment, the IAG company based in Madrid.
Classic and non-European
Among the classic international companies in Barcelona, Lufthansa stands out, which stood at the gates of the million and a half passengers transported in its two lines to the hubs of Frankfurt or Munich and on the same line, although with lower figures, British Airways, Air remained France and KLM, already historic in El Prat, which continue to have an important presence not only on point-to-point flights, but as a connection from Barcelona to destinations around the world through their connection centers in Heathrow, Roissy or Schiphol respectively.
As non-European airlines, last year the most used were the American American Airlines and the Dubai Emirates. Both comfortably exceeded half a million passengers transported. Qatar Airways also stood out, with almost 450,000 travelers in 2019, almost equal to that of Turkish Airlines. It is also worth mentioning the good results of the North American Delta and United with 277,000 and 239,000 respectively and the Israeli El Al who stayed at the gates of the 200,000 travelers, while over the 100,000 passengers transported to and from Barcelona were also the Colombian Avianca, Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong airline and South Korean Korean Airlines.
Madrid is still the main destination
The historic link between Barcelona and Madrid, which began operating in 1927 remains the most demanded. In 2019 it was used by more than 2.5 million travelers, although a good part of them did it to follow from Madrid to other destinations because a good part of the seats in the Iberia and Air Europa planes feed on connecting travelers by Barajas . The second most demanded destination to and from Barcelona is Palma, with 2.1 million users. For years there has been, by number of frequencies, a kind of airlift to Mallorca, although here we could make a nuance: there is an even more demanded destination, Paris, with 2.4 million a result that is reached by adding the two airports: Orly and Charles de Gaulle. The figure would be even higher if we add the 184,000 that flew to Paris-Beauvais, an airport that many discuss the convenience of the name, since it is almost 90 kilometers from the city. After Paris there is a similar case of sum of passage: London, reaches 2.2, although in this case the passage from El Prat is further divided between four airports: Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Luton, the main ones that serve The British capital
Rome-Fiumicino is another star destination from El Prat, with 1.4 million travelers, 100,000 more than Amsterdam-Schiphol. On the other hand there are three airports with a demand of more than one million travelers to and from Barcelona: Seville, Frankfurt and Lisbon, while over 800,000 were airports such as Brussels, Milan, Munich, Malaga, Menorca and the sum of The three main airports in Moscow.
New York unstoppable
In the intercontinental chapter, the star destination is still New York, as it adds up to almost 750,000 annual travelers if John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Newark airports are added. It is followed by Dubai, with 526,000 travelers, although many of them have that city of Emirates as an intermediate point of travel to Asia, Oceania or Africa, a case similar to Doha-Hamad in Qatar, which in this case added 449,000 travelers, very above another airport in the region with similar connection characteristics: Abu Dhabi, which stayed at 163,000 with fewer frequencies.
In Asia, the growth of Seoul, which has exceeded 200,000 travelers, has been remarkable, while in the Americas there have also exceeded 200,000 passengers in just one year on the Barcelona-Buenos Aires-Barcelona line, very close to 191,000 Toronto, in addition to the nearly 180,000 that were with Bogotá, Miami or Sao Paulo, increasingly consolidated destinations with Los Angeles, Montreal, Chicago, Hong Kong or Atlanta, all of them with a demand that has reached or exceeded 100,000 Travellers. The increase in the number of direct travelers to long-haul destinations has been one of the most notable improvements in recent years.
Main countries and singular details
Taking a larger picture of the previous destinations and divided by countries, of the 52.6 million travelers of 2019, 14 went to and from Spanish airports. Something more than five million flew with airports in the United Kingdom, which remains one of the largest emitters, while the third most important state for Barcelona is again Italy, with 4.8 million. After this, almost with the same number of travelers are Germany and France, 3.9 respectively, followed by Portugal and the United States, with 1.7 million passengers each. Switzerland and Holland exceeded 1.6 million, Russia 1.1 and Belgium exceeded one million.
The large figures of 2019 have their counterpoint in unique trips, singular figures, exotic destinations or little or nothing known companies. For example, only one passenger or passenger traveled by direct flight between Barcelona and Saint Marteen, in the Netherlands Antilles, last year. Two did so at the Louis Armstrong airport in New Orleans and four arrived directly at Puerto Vallarta, in Mexico. Five passengers used three private flights that took them from Kuwait City to Barcelona and 10 chose to fly from or to the private airport of Le Castellet, which is part of the complex next to the Paul Ricard speed circuit. On the other hand, 18 travelers chose to go from Barcelona to the Logroño-Agoncillo airport by plane instead of using the highway and 28 took advantage of the existence of the unique North Front airport to reach Gibraltar from El Prat by air. Also in 2019 40 travelers chose to go to Las Vegas by private flight using the corporate terminal of Barcelona and from that same building they were or returned half a hundred people to Lugano, in the Swiss Canton of Ticino, Italian-speaking.
Dozens of names of executive aviation companies, corporations or infrequent companies in El Prat close the list of operators that have passed through Barcelona last year, as is the case of Montenegro Airlines with a single flight in and out or a plane of The Coca Cola company. Four flights added Alba Servizi, the company owned by Silvio Berlusconi and six take-offs and landings three aircraft of the Indian Air Forces. Exactly 18 take-offs and landings were starred by Volotea, another airline based in Barcelona that has not scheduled to have regular flights to El Prat until this year. Also noteworthy are the 24 movements made by the fleet of the Valencian Mercadona distribution company, the 48 flights of executive planes of the Volkswagen car group. All these and several hundred more are located trips putting the magnifying glass in the list of operations of 2019, an exercise that has meant another year of record in number of travelers and airplanes in the installation that for seven years directs the aeronautical superior engineer Sonia Corochano .
Up to 275 million travelers in the Aena network
In Spain, only Madrid has exceeded 52.6 million in Barcelona, having added a total of 61.7 million travelers. The third in the list is Palma-Son Sant Joan who stayed at the gates of 30 million in just one year and is followed by Malaga, Alicante and Gran Canaria with 19.8, 15 and 13.2 million respectively. Within the Aena network, the remarkable growth of 18% in Seville-San Pablo, which exceeded seven and a half million, or the great improvements in small airports such as Badajoz, with 44% more passage, exceeding 75,000 thanks upon the entry into force of the Public Service Mandatory for flights to Madrid and Barcelona from the only airport in Extremadura.
The increase of 25% of users at the Melilla airport was also notable, thanks in part to several lines in OSP and also the revitalization of the two heliports of the network: Ceuta and Algeciras, thanks to the commitment of a Ceuta company, Helity, which has relaunched regular helicopter services from the autonomous city, a service that as such exists in few places around the world. Adding this data to the rest of the Aena facilities, 2019 meant 275,237,801 passengers and 2,360,957 takeoffs and landings for this network.
