At least 11 people died as a result of heavy rain that fell early in Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings, according to fire brigades.

Deaths were recorded in the northern areas of the large city, and occurred as a result of drowning, electrocution, and landslides.
Firefighters are still searching for a missing woman after her car was swept away by a flooded river.
In parts of the city where a “state of emergency” was declared, a total of 200 mm of rain fell in the past 24 hours, more than was expected for the entire month of January.
About 10 bus lines were closed, in addition to a number of metro stations, due to the spread of water.
Firefighters in Rio said they carried out 200 interventions, most of them rescue and assistance operations due to floods and landslides.
The city’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, recommended that residents avoid moving around so as not to “impede the work of officials” and “put their lives at risk.”
For its part, the National Center for Monitoring and Warning of Natural Disasters warned of a “very high” risk of landslides in eight municipalities in Rio state.
