Atletico Madrid reached the quarter-finals of the Spanish King’s Cup, after a thrilling 4-2 victory over its guest, Real Madrid, today, Thursday, at the Metropolitano Stadium, after an extension to extra time, after the original time ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Atleti quartet was signed by Samuel Leno (39), Alvaro Morata (57), Griezmann (100) and Riquelme (119).
While Real Madrid scored a brace, Jan Oblak (an own goal) in the 45th minute, and Joselu in the 82nd minute.
With this victory, Atletico Madrid takes revenge for the loss of the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals, and knocks the royal team out of the King’s Cup.
The match started with mutual confusion from the players of both teams in the first 10 minutes.
The first clear threat came from Jude Bellingham in the 11th minute, as he evaded control and shot a ball with his left foot that hit Jiménez before hitting the crossbar, and rebounding in front of Vinicius, who shot above the goal.
Goalkeeper Oblak excelled in stopping Rodrigo’s shot, which bounced in front of Vinicius, and he also shot, and the Slovenian blocked it brilliantly in the 20th minute.
The response came quickly from Rodrigo De Paul with a header from inside the penalty area, which was caught by goalkeeper Lunin.
Lunin continued to shine by blocking a shot from Alvaro Morata in the 23rd minute.
Samuel Leno succeeded in scoring the lead goal for Atletico Madrid in the 38th minute, as De Paul sent a cross ball that was touched by Rudiger, and it reached Leno, who shot directly into the Royal net.
Oblak made a naive mistake while coming out to deflect a ball fired by Modric from a free kick from outside the penalty area, causing the ball to enter his net, so Real Madrid equalized before the whistle at the end of the first half.
At the beginning of the second half, Rodrigo ran into the area and shot a powerful ball that was blocked by Oblak in the 46th minute.
From a corner kick executed by Modric, it reached Rudiger, who rose and shot a header that goalkeeper Oblak caught in the 52nd minute.
Morata added the second goal for Atletico Madrid, after a series of errors from the Real Madrid defense, before Lunin touched the ball with his hand and it reached Morata’s feet, who easily scored into the net in the 57th minute.
Real Madrid players pressed to equalize, and the most dangerous opportunity came from Rodrigo, who shot a powerful ball that touched Jimenez and hit the crossbar in the 75th minute.
Joselu snatched the equalizer for Real Madrid in the 82nd minute, as he received a cross from the left side from Jude Bellingham, and headed in the bottom left of goalkeeper Oblak.
The situation continued as it was, with a positive draw of 2-2 until the end of regular time, then extra time was used.
Griezmann took advantage of an incorrect pass from Vinicius, raced quickly into the area, and shot a missile from a tight angle to give the Rojiblancos the lead in the 100th minute, making the score 3-2.
The excitement continued when Dani Ceballos scored the equalizer for Real Madrid in the 111th minute, but the goal was canceled due to Bellingham being offside.
Rodrigo Riquelme ended the match by scoring the fourth goal for Atletico Madrid in the 119th minute, taking the Rojiblancos through to the quarter-finals.
