/ The US Department of Justice announced on Monday that Victor Manuel Rocha, who was his country’s ambassador to Bolivia and a member of the National Security Council, was charged with spying for Cuba for 40 years.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement regarding the case that the indictment of Rocha (73 years old) “reveals one of the highest-level and longest-lasting penetrations of the United States government by a foreign agent.”

The Associated Press reported that the competent US authorities arrested a former diplomat who served as Washington’s ambassador to Bolivia, where he faces charges of spying for Cuba.

Manuel Rocha (73 years old) was arrested in Miami, Florida, on Friday, based on a criminal complaint.

One source said that the Justice Department accuses Rocha of working to advance the interests of the Cuban government in secret ways, as federal laws require that persons who perform political actions for the benefit of a foreign government within the United States register with the Justice Department.

It was not immediately clear whether Rocha had an attorney, as a law firm he previously worked for said it did not represent him.

His wife, Carla Witkop Rocha, also hung up the phone when contacted by the Associated Press for comment, saying only: “I don’t need to talk to anyone.”
