A stunning snapshot, shared by NASA, shows a church near… Fussen In Bavaria, southern Germany, it is surrounded by “ice halos”, a rare phenomenon caused by frozen water crystals in the air.
The shapes of these visual appearances can range from rings to arcs and even spots in the sky, and NASA revealed that this image is rare because it captured multiple halos at once.
German photographer Bastian Werner captured the rare event, and said in a post on his Instagram account: “I was running like crazy through the deep snow when I noticed the icy fog at the end of the photo session in St. Colman. I rarely rate my own photo 10/10, but it is… “In fact, it’s worth it, and I’ve faced a lot this year, but I didn’t expect anything like this.”
Last Wednesday, NASA selected the shot for its “Astronomy Picture of the Day” website (ETC), which uploads a new image daily.
At cold enough temperatures – below 0°C – water in the air will freeze and turn into ice, creating a faint haze.
These ice particles may not be heavy enough to fall to the ground, so they remain suspended in the air and can catch sunlight, reflect, refract, and change direction when it hits the crystals, creating an ice corona.
The image shows two prominent ice halos, as well as multiple arcs, including a horizontal arc parallel to the Earth.
