On Friday morning, North Korea fired 200 artillery rounds off its western coast, while its southern neighbor ordered civilians to evacuate Yeonpyeong Island.
The South Korean government confirmed that it had asked civilians to evacuate Yeonpyeong Island after North Pyongyang fired nearly 200 artillery shells off the western coast of North Korea.
An official at the Ministry of Defense in Seoul said during a press conference: “North Korea fired about 200 missiles near Yeonpyeong Island, and the authorities asked civilians to evacuate the island.”
This announcement coincides with the publication by official media in North Korea of news related to the visit of the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, to a factory that produces mobile launch pads for intercontinental ballistic missiles, and his emphasis on the need to strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent in preparation for a military confrontation with its enemy.
During the visit, Kim ordered measures to expand the production capacity of major mobile missile launchers, stressing that the factory plays an important role in enhancing the country’s defense capabilities.
