Today, Monday, the Ministry of Oil announced that the production of the southern refineries had increased to 280 thousand barrels. While it set the date for reaching self-sufficiency in gasoline and gas oil and explained its plan to achieve this goal, it confirmed the imminent opening of the northern refineries after their rehabilitation.
Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad told the (INA): “The coming period will witness great achievements and an increase in fuel production from Iraqi refineries, and this effort is credited to the ministry and the government in implementation of the terms of the government curriculum,” noting that “a few days ago, a new unit was opened, adding up to 70 thousand barrels, and the production of the southern refineries reached 280 thousand barrels.”
He added, “This year, the strategic Karbala refinery was also opened with a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, while rehabilitation work in the Salah al-Din refineries added 130,000 barrels. The coming days will witness the opening of the northern refineries with a capacity of 150,000 barrels in addition to the Doura refinery.”
He stated, “The Ministry is working on more than one axis in establishing and adding new units to existing refineries that improve the quality of products and increase production. As for the other axis, it is offering a group of refineries in the governorates of Iraq to investment to increase production and make room for private sector companies and international companies.” To establish refineries in the north, center and south, which will allow achieving self-sufficiency and for Iraq to become a country exporting oil derivatives.”
He stated, “There was a shortage in the issue of gasoline and gas oil, but after the entry of the fourth unit into the northern refineries in the coming days, in addition to the production of the holy Karbala refineries, self-sufficiency in gasoline and gas oil will be achieved,” pointing out, “There will be an addition during the year.” The new refineries produce fuel with a surplus of fuel that can be exported, in addition to exporting liquid gas after achieving self-sufficiency.”
