A thunderstorm struck eastern Australia on Christmas Eve, killing a woman and cutting off power to 120,000 homes, authorities announced Tuesday.

The energy company “Energex” said that the storm caused “catastrophic” damage and led to the fall of electricity wires in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland (east), and the city of Gold Coast, located 80 km to the south of it.

She explained that the storm put more than 800 power lines out of service, leading to a power outage to 120,000 homes.

“There is no easy way to say this, but some customers will not have electricity for several days, and we are witnessing widespread, catastrophic, hurricane-sized damage,” she added in a post on social media.

For its part, the Queensland Ambulance Service said that a 59-year-old woman died as a result of a tree falling on her on a street on the Gold Coast.

She noted that the woman “sustained serious injuries to the head and died, and ambulance teams were unable to revive her.”

She added that another woman was stuck in her car for more than an hour due to a tree falling near her, but she was not harmed.
