Peru’s Constitutional Court ordered the “immediate” release of former President Alberto Fujimori, who has been serving a 25-year prison sentence since 2009 for crimes against humanity.

According to Agence France-Presse, the court’s decision stipulates the “immediate” release of Fujimori, who ruled the country with an iron fist from 1990 until 2000.
The 85-year-old former president was convicted of killing 25 people in two massacres committed by army commando units as part of what the government called at the time the “War on Terror” (1980-2000).
In 2017, Fujimori obtained a presidential pardon “for humanitarian reasons” and was released from prison, but the Supreme Court soon revoked this pardon and the former president was subsequently returned to prison.
That day, Fujimori said, “Returning to prison is a slow and certain death sentence.”
With its ruling, which is not subject to appeal, the Supreme Court has reinstated the presidential pardon granted to Fujimori.
The former president frequently suffers from respiratory and nervous system problems, including facial paralysis and high blood pressure.
