Three people were killed and at least 28 others were injured as two trains collided with each other on the main island of Java in Indonesia on Friday morning, police said.
Police spokesman Ibrahim Tombo said, “The accident occurred on Friday morning near rice fields in Chikalingka, West Java province,” noting that “several vehicles overturned as a result of the accident.”
According to the authorities, “the accident occurred between two passenger trains, the first was a local train and the second was the Tauranga intercity train, which was on a trip from Surabaya in East Java to Bandung, the capital of the province.”
For his part, Ain Hanneby, spokesman for the local branch of the railway company BTK, said: “We have identified one of the victims as a steward on the Tauranga train, but the rest have not been identified.”
He added that the Tauranga train was carrying 287 passengers, while the local train was carrying 191 passengers. All of these passengers were evacuated and the injured among them were evacuated to the local hospital.
