The Venezuelan authorities announced that they arrested 32 people, both civilians and military personnel, on charges of treason and their involvement in five plots to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro.
Venezuelan Prosecutor Tarek William Saab said, “All those arrested confessed and revealed information about the plans targeting the Venezuelan people and democratic society.”
He explained that arrest warrants were issued against 11 other people, including human rights activists, journalists, and exiled military personnel, noting that the plots targeted, in addition to Maduro, Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino.
Maduro spoke about these conspiracies last week in his annual address to the nation, but without going into detail.
Commenting on these arrests, Maduro said on his television program, “The maximum punishment must be imposed for terrorism, conspiracy, and treason against the homeland.”
