Sea levels in South Korea have risen by more than 10 centimeters over the past 34 years amid growing concerns about climate change, government data showed on Tuesday.
The data showed that the Eastern Sea witnessed the highest rise at 3.44 mm annually on average, followed by the Yellow Sea with 3.15 mm and the Southern Sea with 2.71 mm annually.
The analysis was based on data collected from 21 monitoring centers in the country’s coastal areas, and the data also showed that sea levels rose 30% faster over the past decade compared to the previous 30 years.
The country’s average sea level increased by 10.3 cm from 1989 to 2022, an increase of 3.03 mm annually, according to the Korea Marine Survey and Oceanographic Agency.
