During his meeting with a senior Chinese official, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, at a time when Taiwan is witnessing decisive presidential elections.

Yesterday, Friday, Blinken discussed in Washington with Liu Jianchao, Head of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a number of files, including the situation in Taiwan. A US State Department spokesman said in a statement after the meeting: “Secretary of State (Blinken) once again stressed the “The importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.”

He added that “the two sides held constructive discussions on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues” and “acknowledged the importance of continuing to keep channels of communication open between the United States and the People’s Republic of China.”

The spokesman indicated that the officials discussed the Ukraine crisis, the North Korea issue, and the situation in the Middle East, with Blinken stressing “the importance of preserving navigational rights and freedoms in the Red Sea and avoiding further escalation after the American-British strikes on Yemen.”
