IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called on North Korea to allow agency inspectors to inspect North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear reactor.
Grossi said in a statement that the agency believes that the reactor may have begun operation, expressing concern about the possibility of plutonium production there.
He added: “I call on North Korea to fully implement its obligations under the UN Security Council resolutions, and to establish cooperation with the agency as a matter of urgency in order to fully implement the agreement on the guarantees contained in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and to resolve all outstanding issues, especially those that emerged during the period.” Absence of IAEA inspectors.”
He stressed that the International Agency is “ready to deal with any of the aforementioned issues,” noting that “proceeding with the development of the nuclear program, including putting the Yongbyon reactor into operation, is considered a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.”
It is noteworthy that the nuclear research center in Yongbyon, which includes a light-water nuclear reactor, is located about 100 km from the capital, Pyongyang, and is considered the most important nuclear facility in North Korea. North Korea has pledged to stop the reactor according to the agreements reached during The inter-Korean summit in December 2018, but since 2021 the International Atomic Energy Agency has spoken that North Korea may have resumed operation of the reactor.
